Let the puck drop at Women’s U18 World Hockey Championships

Share

For the second year in a row, the U18 Women’s World Championships have been cancelled due to “safety concerns” while the Men’s U20 World Juniors continues as scheduled.

Both teams spend hours training and practicing for one of the largest hockey events of the year. The safety measures were deemed adequate enough to allow the Men’s championship to proceed, however the Women’s Championship is being held to a different standard – despite both teams following the same protocols.

The U18 Women’s Championship was not postponed until “safety” could be guaranteed – rather it was outright cancelled with no reschedule date… for the second year in a row. This is a failure of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to recognize and support women in sport and sends a message that women’s hockey matters less.

Let’s send the IIHF a message back: we care, we see the hours players spend in gyms and on the ice, we support women in sport, and we want the 2021 U18 Women’s Championship to have a date.

Tell the IIHF and IIHF president, Luc Tardif, to reschedule the U18 Women’s World Championships and allow the players to play in one of the most important hockey events of the year.
