MEET SERAFINA APPLEGATE!

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Serafina, I am 13 years old and I live near Boston, Massachusetts. I started skating around the age of three, and I played hockey for the first time when I was six. My older brother played hockey so I wanted to try it. When given the chance to try goalie I absolutely loved it, and this is my fourth season playing goalie for the East Coast Wizards.

What made you want to be a WHL Brand Ambassador?

I want to be a WHL Ambassador because I want to inspire more girls to play the sport I love. Hockey has made such a positive impact on my life, and I want more girls to have that experience. Also, much work needs to be done to provide girls and women equal opportunities in hockey and I want to contribute to that change by being an ambassador.

What are you most looking forward to as a #WHLAMBASSADOR?

I am looking forward to inspiring more girls and women to play hockey, and to help represent what Women’s Hockey Life stands for. I am also looking forward to connecting with more girls and women who are as passionate about hockey as I am.

What’s something not a lot of people know about you?

I am left handed. Also, aside from hockey I play softball and field hockey.

If you could sit down and have dinner with one female hockey player, who would it be and why?

Maddie Rooney. She is such an incredible athlete and is inspiring to watch. I would love to hear more about her hockey journey and how she got to where she is today.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given in hockey or in life?

All that matters is the next shot. My first hockey coach said this to me when I was six and I haven’t forgotten it since. If you make a mistake, you have to learn from it and then move on, and look forward to the next chance you get, which can be applied in hockey and in life. Another good piece of advice I have been given is to work hard and never give up. Although it is a common piece of advice, it is so important.

What’s your dream for women’s hockey?

My dream for women’s hockey is that more girls will play the sport, and that women’s hockey (including the sport overall and the individual athletes and teams that compete so hard) will be respected as much as men’s hockey.
