MEET ELLIE PATRICK!
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Ellie Patrick. I am 14 and I live in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I play a variety of sports including field hockey, netball and I train at the gym twice a week with Rhys, my personal trainer. I originally started figure skating at the age of three and as a treat, my parents took me to a Belfast Giants game. As soon as I saw them play, I knew I wanted to give it a go. I started ice hockey when I was five for fun. Over the years, I grew more confident and knew that ice hockey was the career I wanted to take.
I have played for the U-11 Scottish National Conference team, the U-13 England National team in an all-boys tournament in Belgium and became the team captain. Following our successful victory of third place, I went on to play for the U-16 level England National team.
My goal with hockey is to play for Great Britain and make the Olympics.
What made you want to be a WHL Brand Ambassador?
I wanted to become a WHL ambassador as I wanted to inspire other girls and women to show if I can do it they can too. I also wanted to promote women’s hockey all over the world, but especially in Northern Ireland as there is only one junior hockey team and girls don’t seem to stick around.
What are you most looking forward to as a #WHLAMBASSADOR?
To help promote a sport that I am passionate about and to generate knowledge to others that might not know that ice hockey is a girl’s sport too and there are girls’ teams out there.
What’s something not a lot of people know about you?
I used to be a cheerleader! None of my teammates or coaches knew about it. I was preforming at a competition one day that my coach’s daughters happened to be competing in also. I unknowingly walked past my coach and he had to do a double take, as he realized it was me. I didn’t even know until the following training session when he approached me to have a giggle!
If you could sit down and have dinner with one female hockey player, who would it be and why?
I would like to have dinner with Kendall Coyne. I would choose her because she inspires me. I would like to learn her techniques and training regiments to help me become a faster and stronger hockey player.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given in hockey or in life?
I was once told this quote from the NHL player, Charles Linglet, “Being a professional is not only what you are on the ice but what you are off the ice. It’s the way you carry yourself, the way you treat people, the way you live, the way you treat your body. There is a lot to sacrifice.”
What’s your dream for women’s hockey?
My dream for women’s hockey is to make it equal to men’s hockey and to be known by many worldwide. One day, I hope the NWHL will be shown more on TV.
