Meet Briar Deckers!

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Briar Deckers. I am from a small town in Ontario, Canada. My mom taught me to skate before I was two years old and ever since then I was in love with being on the ice. I started playing hockey when I was four and I love it more every season I play.

What made you want to be a WHL Brand Ambassador?

My Mom showed me some of the WHL posts on Instagram and I really wanted to join all the amazing women who were already ambassadors for WHL.  I love that it’s a safe place for girls and women to share their love of the game and hockey experiences.

What are you most looking forward to as a #WHLAMBASSADOR?

To share my passion for hockey and share my hockey experiences with the hockey world.

What’s something not a lot of people know about you?

I love to read. It is my favourite way to unwind and relax.

If you could sit down and have dinner with one female hockey player, who would it be and why?

It is really hard to pick just one. Obviously I would love to pick all of the women who have played for Team Canada because they are all awesome role models. If I had to narrow it down, I would pick Hayley Wickenheiser because she is an amazing leader, super talented and an awesome ambassador for the game. Also she has played men’s and women’s hockey like I play boys and girls hockey so I really look up to her.

I would also pick Geraldine Heaney because she is regarded as one of the best at defence in the women’s game. She is an offensive defence women which is a lot like me. I would love to get advice from both of these players.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given in hockey or in life?

“Hard work pays off.”

My dad always tells me this. He says it’s true in sports and life. You get out of something what you put into it. If you are passionate about something it’s worth your best effort.

What’s your dream for women’s hockey?

I want everyone to see women’s hockey through my eyes. I know girls and women are every bit as good, tough, and driven as boys but some people don’t see it that way. I want to show the world that girls are amazing hockey players.
