Meet Chloe Young!
Tell us about yourself!
Hi, my name is Chloe Young. I come from Irvine Ayrshire in Scotland, which is on the west coast. I currently work in the leisure industry.
I started hockey when I was eight years old—I couldn’t even skate when I started, but here I am twelve years later still loving the best sport in the world. When I played junior hockey here in Scotland I played on a mixed team with me being the only girl, but I played with the same boys for eight years and together we won the Scottish league and Scottish Cup in the U16s.
I then joined the only competing women’s team in Scotland—the Solway ladies, which was a three hour round trip drive twice a week for one hour of training, but that’s what you do when you’re passionate about your sport.
I now play recreationally with a local women’s team, the Ayrshire Amazons, a fantastic bunch of ladies pursuing their passion. We are all different but the same in our drive to have fun each time we hit the ice.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BE A WHL BRAND AMBASSADOR?
I wanted to be a WHL Ambassador because we need good role models in hockey for our younger counterparts to develop a passion to grow the game.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO AS A #WHLAMBASSADOR?
I am most looking forward to being a part of sharing and caring about how we develop and grow the game for other women and girls. As a younger player I had the opportunity to participate in the world’s first U18 global game wearing a Great Britain shirt. I will cherish this memory as all the girls who participated created a world’s first.
WHAT’S SOMETHING NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOU?
The quirkiest think about my game prep is I always do my left side when dressing, i.e. socks, skates.
IF YOU COULD SIT DOWN AND HAVE DINNER WITH ONE FEMALE HOCKEY PLAYER, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?
The hockey player I would most like to have dinner with is Hilary Knight because I think she is a huge driving force within the sport and I could get some tips from her.
WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE EVER BEEN GIVEN IN HOCKEY OR IN LIFE?
The best advice I have had is never give up, fight till the buzzer, but have FUN! FUN! FUN!.
WHAT’S YOUR DREAM FOR WOMEN’S HOCKEY?
My dream for women’s hockey is that every girl or woman, regardless of their skill or ability, should be included and respected on the ice.
