2016-2017 Syracuse Hockey: Thank You Seniors

Only an acronym that the 2016-2017 Syracuse Women’s Ice Hockey team knows and lived by this season. My sophomore year at Syracuse was another year that I won’t forget for many reasons. One obvious reason that sticks out is losing in the CHA final. It was heartbreaking but that being said you learn more from a loss than a win. The people I was surrounded by will leave an impact on me forever.

Watching Robert Morris celebrate across the ice was a sight I will never forget but you have to give them credit, they had a great season. No matter the hatred on the ice, you have to respect good players and good teams. At the end of the day, RMU got the best of us. This is something that I know will motivate me and my returning teammates. We want to win, I have never been apart of a program who wants to win so bad. We all do, all the alumni, coaches, parents, alumni’s parents, I really mean everyone who has even been around our program wants us to win. But there is a difference, the want to win and then making sacrifices to win. This is the step we are on right now for next season.

But before telling you about next season, I can’t write this post without saying thank you to the 5 seniors.

Heather Schwarz: Straight out of Connecticut, this season Heather had a killer season, the best season she had in 4 years and I am glad I was there playing with her. When we needed a goal, it was like heather was there. She is one of the funniest people I know. You know those players in practice who love to chirp you but always keep you at your best. That’s Heather. She always knew how to put a smile on my face.

Jessica Sibley: If you heard her speak, you would know she’s from Saskatchewan. Easily one of the best players Syracuse has ever produced on the ice and off. She has the most patience you’ll ever see. If anyone can get you the puck, it’s Sibs. We got really close this past year and I am really thankful for that. Her attitude is contagious; I can’t remember a bad moment with her. I really respect her and I can’t wait to see what her future holds.

Larissa Martyniuk: Winnipeg eh? Funny story about Marty, my freshman year on our first road trip, she was my roommate. I am being honest with you when I say she scared me so bad. She has a big heart but she knows it, she can be intimidating. She was the last person I wanted to room with just because I was so scared but when we got in the room my whole opinion changed. She was awesome, we stayed up probably a little too late because we were talking. It really helped me feel comfortable and I thank her for that. Keep being Lethal everywhere Marty. Thank you for teaching me so many things on and off the ice.

Morgan Blank: A D1 hockey player from Kentucky. That’s awesome. Morgan really inspires me on and off the ice. She really came into her own this year but what impresses me most is how educated Morgan is. Morgan is the type of person you want to know. I mean, if I need a job 10 years down the line, I am calling Morgan. I know she would help me.  I am serious when I say every time I speak to her I feel like I have gotten more intelligent.  She’s someone I look up to and I really got to know this year and I am thankful for that.

Laurence Porlier: Elle est du québec. Lau and I have always been close, right when I arrived in Syracuse. She has overcome a lot of adveristy thoughout her 4 years and was a perfect example of why you can’t give up. She had a great season and we wouldn’t of had success without her. I promised Lau we would win a CHA championship this year and it still bothers me everyday that we didn’t get it done. I can’t wait to see mini Lau’s running around. Call me if you need a babysitter.

The 2017 senior class has been amazing and they have taught me so much. They helped me continue to grow into the player and person I want to be. They deserved to win the CHA and it kills me everyday we didn’t win. All I have left to say is thank you and I promise we will give everything we have to win next season. Every single Alumni deserves to see Syracuse Hockey win a CHA Championship and I promise we won’t stop there.

Before I end my first blog post, I have to say I am huge on quotes… So I leave you all with this.

“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Thank you for reading! I can’t wait to share my experiences at Syracuse with everyone. Go Orange.
