MEET SOPHIE!
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Sophie Humphries and I am from St. Catharines Ontario Canada. I play hockey for the Stoney Creek Sabres U13 AA team as a centre. I have played hockey since the age of 5. My great grandfather played for the Detroit Red Wings and hockey has been a big part of our family ever since. I also play spring hockey for Pro Hockey and have travelled to Vegas, Nashville, and Montreal playing the sport I love.
What made you want to be a WHL Brand Ambassador?
I am always looking for women’s hockey groups online as I am motivated seeing both the successes shared and the focus on girls in hockey. I saw your group and have been following your posts and stories for awhile now. I see myself in some of the girls you promote and I thought if I could represent your organization as an ambassador, it would help keep me focused on becoming the best version of myself, both as a young girl and as a hockey player. I would hope to be a good role model for others as well.
What are you most looking forward to as a #WHLAMBASSADOR?
I am looking forward to sharing some of my successes and challenges, in hopes to inspire others. When reading about all of the previous ambassadors before me I became inspired. I think an ambassador can impact other girls and I hope to be able to be a positive role model. I am also excited to know that I will now hold myself even more accountable to be a great player and a great human as well.
What’s something not a lot of people know about you?
I have a ritual with my family of polar bear dipping in our frozen lake on New Year’s Day! I am also learning meditation.
If you could sit down and have dinner with one female hockey player, who would it be and why?
I would LOVE to have dinner with Sarah Nurse. She is a major role model as she played for the same organization as me, Stoney Creek Sabres. She faced many challenges as a girl in hockey and she created so much success for herself. She plays for the PWHPA (Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association) as well as for Team Canada. She also went to the NHL skills competition to show that women are highly skilled, just like the guys. She is a leader in girl’s hockey and I would love to ask her about her journey.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given in hockey or in life?
I have been so lucky to have been given so much great advice from my parents, coaches and mentors. What stands out is that success is not a destination, it’s a journey. There is a celebration each day if you know how to see it.
What’s your dream for women’s hockey?
I hope that there will be a league for women which is as popular as the NHL.
