Welcome to opening day of the 2015 IIHF Women’s U18 World Championship at HarborCenter in Buffalo, N.Y.
Here’s a recap of the opening games heading into the marquee preliminary matchup between the U.S. and Canada.
Sweden 3, Japan 2
In the opening game of the tournament, Hanna Olsson scored with 58 seconds left in regulation to give Sweden a 3-2 win over Japan.
Olsson scored the first goal of the tournament just 2:13 into the game, but Japan kept drawing power plays with smart, fast play. They tied the game on the power play in the second on a goal from Moe Tsukimot
Sweden regain the lead just 1:25 into the third but Tsukimoto scored with 3:50 left to again knot the game. Off a faceoff in Japan’s zone, Olsson rung a shot just under the crossbar to give Sweden the lead. Emma Soderberg held off an impressive offense from Japan, which could not get one final equalizer.
Russia 3, Czech Republic 1
Three different players scored for Russia who built a 3-0 lead and went on for the 3-1 win over the Czech Republic.
Anna Shokhina and Kristina Korotkikh gave Russia a 2-0 first period lead with Polina Bolgareva extending the lead in the second.
Early in the third Barbora Patockova put the Czech Republic on the board and the team held the overall advantage in shots, 27-26, but couldn’t find its scoring legs.
Switzerland 2, Finland 0
Goaltender Andrea Brandli made 39 saves for the first shutout of the tournament. The Swiss won despite being woefully outshot, 39-19.
Alina Muller tallied on the power play in the second period and Kaleigh Quennec added another goal as the Swiss built a 2-0 lead.
