My name is Amanda and ever since I was a young girl I’ve been really into physical activities. Sports have always been a huge part of my life, and I am blessed to have sports guide me through life. At the age of six I started skating, watching hockey and instantly fell in-love with the sport. What I fell in love most about the sport then and what I still love about it is: It’s a sport played on this giant piece of ice, the ability to control a game, the team aspect on and off ice between teammates and so much more.
I knew at a very young age that stand up hockey would be something that I couldn’t physically do because of my physical disability but, oh did I want to DO IT! I wanted to be the next Cammi Granato! So to get the feel for the ice and blades at my feet, throughout all these years I’ve been skating with at a skating club in the city of Montreal.
Fast forward to the present I was unable to go to the arena due to the pandemic for about 2 years now, it’s made me think and reflect carefully about my future.
Now at the age of 26, I’m overjoyed and excited to say I’ll be joining a para hockey team this hockey season. Wait, what! You may want to ask me, why now? Simple, when I was younger, I wasn’t confident in myself or in my decision making. Now that I’ve grown up and experienced many hurdles along the way, I’ve gained my confidence and I can firmly say, I’m ready for this journey!
This will be an entirely new experience for me. I’m definitely expecting the unexpected but going all in and giving everything I’ve got. For my first season, my short term goal is to get comfortable with the sled and my long term goal is to continuously physically improve on and off ice.
As the season is starting very soon, I’m excited to take you all on this journey with me.
