MEET KATELYN

Tell us about yourself!

I am Katelyn, I’m 9 years old from Stafford in the UK.  The very first time I put on a pair of skates was the end of February 2022.
Someone had asked me at an ice hockey game had I ever thought of playing because I was making so much noise cheering on my team. My reply was that “I can’t even skate”.  They said to me it’s not that you can’t it’s just you’ve never tried.
It was slow at first but then I finally started to skate without a skating aid in May 2022 once I built up some confidence on the ice as my dad told me I couldn’t take hockey lessons unless I could skate without one. I’ve never looked back and love it with a passion. I live for moments to be on the ice even though we don’t have an ice rink in our town.

What made you want to be a WHL Brand Ambassador?

Since starting to skate and play hockey I’ve met the most amazing people, girls of all ages who inspire me constantly. I want more girls to be aware of ice hockey and to want to become involved and learn to play.

What are you most looking forward to as a #WHLAMBASSADOR?

Meeting more girls/women in ice hockey who share the same passion and maybe even inspiring other girls to want to give it a try!

What’s something not a lot of people know about you?

I can curl my tongue and go cross eyed at the same time! It makes people laugh 🤭. I am also learning bits of figure skating as it helps me with my edges and be a better skater.

If you could sit down and have dinner with one female hockey player, who would it be and why

Chamonix Jackson who has been selected to play for GB. I met Chamonix a while ago and she was so kind to me and really took time to speak to me. I’d love to talk to her about her journey, how she made it to play for GB and her experiences of playing hockey in other countries ( university hockey ).

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given in hockey or in life?

Be yourself, be a good person, try your best and always work hard. Encourage others to do the same and always give people encouragement and be positive about their hockey journeys too.

What’s your dream for women’s hockey?

I would love to see women’s/girls hockey become as popular as men’s/boys hockey and for it  to become more accessible and popular with girls from a young age. It’s an amazing sport, you form amazing friendships and bonds with truly inspirational people.
