The NAIT Ooks have had a pretty decent start to the 2011-2012 season. As of right now we are sitting at .500! We managed to win our home opener (Oct 14) against the Grant MacEwan Griffins, and then ended up losing to them at their home rink 3-2 the following night. Our second weekend of hockey (Oct 21 and 22) brought us up against the Mount Royal Cougars. We played at home on the Friday night but couldn’t manage to pull of the W with a 4-2 loss. The next night we finally got our win against the Cougars that we have been waiting for, for way too long. We won 1-0! I would like to throw out a big Congratulations to our goaltender of both weekends, Jill Diachuk, for receiving the ACAC Female Athlete of the Week. She has played outstanding!!!
This past weekend was our by-weekend so we didn’t have any hockey at all. During the day Saturday we had a team function. We set team goals, had our sports pysch come in, and then did a little scavenger hunt around Edmonton. It was a blast. Our team got split into 3 teams and we each had to dress in some sort of theme. Obviously my team had the best outfits! We had to take pictures for the hunt, and then when we got back to the school our coaches judged each team’s photos and picked the best one. The team with the most points won, and doesn’t have to clean the bus on any bus trips for November. My team, unfortunately lost… but the coaches decisions were questionable I think!
As mentioned in my last blog, I said that my family was coming down to watch my home opener. They ended up staying with me for 5 nights, and it was so nice to finally have them here! It felt good to win our home opener with them in attendance and also when I scored the opening goal for the Ooks in the new season.
This week we are preparing for our 2 games against the SAIT Trojans! Last year the Trojans beat us out in the first round of playoffs, so now its revenge time. If we keep up the hard work and determination, I think it’s going to pay off for us this weekend!
Other than what I just told you, nothing is really new in my life. School, hockey, train, bed… there you have it! With only having three classes this semester though, I do have more spare time on my hands then last year. Usually I end up running errands or doing homework. But, last night I set up my Guitar Hero game on the Playstation, so now I can rock out in my spare time too!
That’s all I have for right now. If you feel like coming to watch some hockey, we play at NAIT @ 7pm Saturday night!!!
All the best,
Sherri Bowles #21, NAIT Ooks Women’s Hockey
