This season is already in full swing and were only a week into games. After a few weeks of shuffling lines and defensive pairings, the squad came together to play our in-state rival, Yale. Even before we took the ice at all this year, we all had Yale on our minds. Not only because they are great competition for us, but they are also our first scrimmage of the year and we use that to see where we stand as a team. With the addition of the freshmen this year, we had all the confidence in the world going into Yale. After a tough game with no quitters on either side, there had to be a winner. In this tilt, Yale came out on top and got the better of our young team, but it was not a complete loss. Our freshmen were able to shake out some nerves, our returners showed leadership, and the goalies used teamwork to keep pucks out of the net.
Moving past Yale, we knew we couldn’t dwell on a loss. We had to look forward to the next weekend, a two game stand at the University of Rhode Island. Traditionally, URI games are chippy grind-out games for us. This year we made a goal to win decisively and pack two wins under our belt moving into the following weekend of games against Holy Cross. The first game came and went, some high points, some low. The game ended with a win for us, but it was not as decisive as we wished. We went back to the hotel, regrouped then set a game plan for the next day.
The next day had started much differently. Everyone was ready for this game. In the first we came out strong but were only able to burry one. The second was pretty evenly matched, which we did not like. The majority of my saves from the whole game happened to be in the second period. The evenness of the play pushed the team to play harder in the third. URI was able to pop two quick ones to tie the game 2-2 and Coach called a time-out to regroup. Not even thirty seconds after the time-out, one of our assistant captains lead the rush down and scored a quick goal to put us back in the lead. Following this, another quick tally to put us in control for the rest of the game. We felt good about the win and Coach came through with a broom to clean up the locker room symbolizing our sweep.
We look forward to playing against our out-of-state rival Holy Cross next weekend and we will even be sporting some new lines and defensive pairings. We all have a good feeling about this weekend and hope the outcome reflects our hard work at practice.
