Notes from the Full 2012 CWHL Draft

The 2012 CWHL Draft was held in Mississauga, Ontario July 17, 2012 at 7:00pm. You can view all the picks and where they are headed at the CWHL Website. There were 61 players selected through the completed draft. Here are some things to note from the results: 

  • There were eight goalies selected (Hilary Pattenden, Charline Labonte, Genevieve Lacasse, Florence Schelling, Kathy Desjardins, Caroline Hu, Lauren Patterson and Amanda Mazzotta). 
  • Aside from goalies there were 14 defenders and 39 forwards selected. 
  • 12 players from the United States were selected (Hilary Knight, Anne Schleper, Jen Schoullis, Kelley Steadman, Brittany Haverstock, Kasey Boucher, Kimberly Riley, Lisa Weiss, Sarah Moe, Stephanie Bram, Caroline Hu and Lauren Patterson).
  • Two International players were selected (Florence Schelling- Switzerland, Virgine Bouetz Andrieu- France). As well two players that played in the EWHL for the Vienna Flyers were selected (Marieve Provost and Kristine LaBrie). 
  • 47 players selected were from Canada. 
  • Of the 61 players selected 14 played in the CIS, 30 played College Hockey in the USA, four played in the WWHL, two played in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League, one played in the SAWHA, one played for the French National Team, one played in the AMMFHL, and one played in the SSWHL
  • 11 players selected formerly played in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League in Ontario (Haley Irwin, Hilary Knight, Natalie Spooner, Tara Watchorn, Laura McIntosh, Carolyne Prevost, Brittany Haverstock, Catherine White, Jordanna Peroff, Claire McKimm and Stephanie Gastman). 
  • Eight players over the age of 25 were selected. The oldest player selected was Sarah Moe (31). 
  • The youngest player selected was Shanelle Bjorndahl (17) by Team Alberta. She played for the Calgary Flyers of the AMMFHL (Midget AAA) last season. 
  • The players drafted from Canada are broken down by Province as follows: Ontario (17), Alberta (14), Quebec (8), Manitoba (3), British Columbia (2), Saskatchewan (1) and Nova Scotia (1).
  • The players drafted from the USA are broken down by State as follows: Minnesota (2), Pennsylvania (2), Minnesota (2), Illinois (2), Idaho (1), Maine (1), Wisconsin (1) and New York (1).
