I don’t think I have ever been so excited to write a blog for my followers and I am so happy to tell you all that the NAIT Ooks Women’s Hockey Team are defending ACAC CHAMPIONS!!!!
On Saturday night we managed to wrap up the series with a 2-1 win over the Grant MacEwan Griffins to win the series 3-1! This series was so close the whole time with all the games being one goal differentials. Our team knew it was important to score the first goal every game and we managed to do that in the result of our wins.
Going into this year, we knew it was going to be totally different than last year. In 2012-2013 we had a team full of veterans whereas this year we had over half of our team being new rookies. There was definitely a lot of coaching that needed to be done with our new players and also help from our vets in order to have the rookies adapt to being a NAIT Ook. I must stay, they did a tremendous job and were a huge part of our success this season.
The route we took to the championship this year was also different compared to last year. Last season we got an automatic bye right to the finals since we finished in first place. This year, we had to go through the semi’s and beat out Red Deer to get to the championship final. I don’t think it really made it a disadvantage for us, I think it just motivated our team even more to strive for our end goal. Winning last year was super awesome, and it is very rare that you can do it the exact same way twice so we had to expect a different scenario to happen!
Throughout this past weekend, it was amazing to see all the support we had from so many fans. Basically every player on our team had their parents in the stands cheering us on…. they traveled from Manitoba, Saskatchewan and also BC. The support was tremendous. We also had our fellow Ooks in the stands, and we have to give a big high give to the NAIT Men’s Hockey team for supporting us at every game they could possibly make in the playoffs. All of the NAIT Athletic Staff was so supportive as well and we could not thank them more!
Next up for the NAIT Ooks is a bit of time off. Unfortunately it is exam week this week so a lot of girls are studying hard. We are getting our championship ring orders under control already and we are setting up our year end meetings with our coach. We will get a bit of time off before it’s time to start training for next season. We have our Athletic Awards Night coming up and also our prospects camp this weekend….. and obviously there will be some celebrations in there as well!
I hope you all have a lovely month of March and I look forward to sharing our celebrations with you!!!
