It’s July 15th and I am thinking that it is about the halfway point between hockey seasons (although sometimes I think the season never really ends!). I thought I’d take this opportunity to send you a personal note and to catch you up on what’s going on in my hockey world.
To begin, I can’t thank you enough! “You” being those folks who receive my Saturday morning blog posts in their e-mail box. I get so much positive feedback from you that it keeps me writing, and frankly, keeps me loving the game of hockey. So, again, thank you. Last week my blog post was my 121st. The first one was published on December 14, 2014. Not quite one per week, but close.
I do have some projects on the go that I wanted to let you know about. I am a big fan of numbered lists so…
1) My editor just handed me back my new book to make another pass at revisions. I am really looking forward to finishing this project that looks at how to approach a season and how to simplify the game for our players. My hope is that it will be published in mid-August in time for coaches to use some of the ideas and concepts in the upcoming season.
2) I am a great advocate of building strong team communities. Creating and strengthening the "Team Triangle” (athlete, coach, parent) is crucial to success in sports at every level. Over the past few weeks I have put together a presentation to help associations and coaching staffs build strong communities. If your organization would be interested, I would love to chat about presenting to your group. As well, I have just published a new page on my website listing my current and past presentations. You can access it by clicking here.
3) Finally, I am very excited to be named to the staff of this season’s National Women’s Under-18 Team. It is always an honour to be able to represent your country and I am looking forward to being part of the program again this season. This will be the second time I have served as video coach for the U18 team - in 2014 we managed to win the world championship in Budapest, Hungary with a 5-1 win over the USA. This season we will start with August camp in Calgary, then travel to Lake Placid, NY for a three game series against the USA. In the new year, the team will travel to Russia for the 2018 IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship. (Click here for this week’s press release.)
That’s it from me this week. I hope everyone is enjoying a terrific start to the summer and I look forward to keeping in touch as we head towards next season.
Take care and have a terrific week ahead.
