Canada Takes on Slovakia for Gold at Street Hockey Championship

Time has been flying by over here in Slovakia – it is already the night before the championship game. The tournament has been going well so far as Team Canada ended up finishing first in the round robin but not without some last minute theatrics. After beating both Greece and Austria 13-0, we ended up tied with Slovakia for first place. Our coach called us in for a quick meeting the morning of the quarterfinals as she had a surprise for us. Were we going to receive sponsorship from Nutella? No – we were informed that to break the tie, we had to face the Slovakians in a 5 player shootout!  Fortunately goals from teammates Silvia Traversa and our youngest star Kristen Cooze, along with outstanding goaltending by Kathryn Padmore, led us to a 2-1 shootout victory. After a quick cool down, nap, and warm up we faced Greece in the quarterfinals where we went on to win 8-0.

Today was the semi finals where we played our south of the border rivals – the United States. This was by far our most challenging game of the tournament. We were forced to shake off the rust from our defensive game and push ourselves to play hard in all three zones. The final score of the game was 5-0 but it was hard fought throughout.

Tomorrow we will play Slovakia for the gold. Instead of playing on NHL sized rinks like we have been so far, we will play on an Olympic sized rink. This along with the very physical style of the Slovakian squad will test our conditioning. Team Canada is up for the challenge though – wish us luck!
