School and hockey has been very busy so far, which is the way it usually is … especially in September.
We have played three exhibition games so far and they all went well and we were able to see where our strengths and weaknesses are. We have a fair amount of new players this year so the biggest thing is showing them what it means to have Pandas “Passion”. This is terminology we like to use on our team that encompasses the whole aspect of work ethic. The breakdowns that we did have in our exhibition games were related to us not moving our feet or pressuring our opponents to the extent in which is expected of us. I believe that this is always a good learning experience for the younger players because they probably aren’t used to pushing themselves every practice, game and shift. The more exhibition games we play, the more they will understand this concept.
Another new tid bit of information this week is that Hailey Wickenheiser is playing for the University of Calgary. Obviously most people probably already know about this, but from an opponents perspective, I find it quite interesting. I look forward to playing against her and I also am interested to see what kind of affect that has on the dynamics of the U of C Dinos hockey program/team. I know Hailey is a very intense person so it will be quite interesting to see whether it has a positive or negative effect. Having said all of this, I am looking forward to playing them that’s for sure.
As for school…. school is hectic right now. I’m currently doing my second practicum for teaching so it’s very interesting and I’m learning a lot, but it’s quite the work load. I literally get up and go to school pretty well all day, then have dry land training and practice and sometimes I don’t get home until 8:30, which doesn’t leave much time for supper and homework. However, I know it will be worth it in the end and next semester won’t be as busy so I have that to look forward to. I haven’t found out which school I will be teaching at yet … I’ll find that out October 1st. However, I got a referral from St. FX, which is a hockey academy in Edmonton! This would be awesome because I would most likely teach half the day and then go on the ice and coach the second half, which would be amazing!
Anyways, I will be sending another note next month with some good info on our league games!! I can’t wait until the season starts up!
