Boston College Crams Their Break with Community Service

As one of four teams to return to campus early from Christmas break it was easy to see how vacant our snowless campus is over the holiday. With this empty campus came the harsh reality that we would only have our teammates to hang out with for the next three to four weeks. With 8 days leading up to our first game of the New Year, we found ourselves facing great adversity. Not in our practices and lifts, but rather in what television series we should begin to watch to preoccupy the large amount of free time we would have outside of Conte Forum.

We started the break missing five of our teammates.  Blake Bolden, Taylor Wasylk, and Emily Fields attended the USA Winter Training Camp in Minnesota, having recently returned to campus on January 1st.  Alex Carpenter is at the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship in the Czech Republic and will be missing our first game of January on the 5th.  Kristin Regan, our primary blogger, is home sick and will be returning soon!

Our break isn’t solely composed of hockey and watching movies and television series; we always try to take advantage of the opportunity to cram as much community service into our winter break as possible. On December 29th we played a game against the East Coast Jumbos, a hockey team comprised of players with varying special needs.  The Jumbos’ passion for the game of hockey rivals our own, and it was one of the most exciting games so far this year. We are also looking forward to visits to Franciscan Hospital and Mass Hospital School coming up soon.  We will also continue or weekly Skate with Newton Special Athletes on Thursdays.
