Hockey season is finally upon us! After what seemed like an eternity, the Bison Women’s Hockey team has been reunited and is back into the full swing of things. We have 19 returning players and 8 rookies, all of whom are fitting in famously. This year’s preseason has been anything but dull. We wasted no time getting back into pristine shape with the help of our new strength and conditioning trainer, Coach Terry. As we lay in pools of sweat after our grueling first workout, we faintly heard a voice over our huffing and puffing informing us that that was merely a warm-up and we would be doing a real workout tomorrow. It was then we realized that this would be no walk in the park. Even hardcore workout enthusiast, Rachele “Turbo” Bosc divulged that she had “met her match” regarding Coach’s workouts. Although it’s been quite the challenge, all of our hard work has definitely paid off; it has now been a full month of training and these gals are feeling fit, strong, and well prepared for the start of regular season!

A big highlight of the preseason was definitely our trip to Toronto. After a busy first day of sightseeing and shopping, we got to see the Jays take on the Yankees at Rogers Center, which was an absolute blast. Over the next three days we faced great competition and had our first look at other CIS opponents. We finished off the weekend with a 2-1 record and felt that we had made great strides both on and off the ice. After our 2-0 win against the University of Waterloo on our last day, our team was treated to something we could not have been more enthused about… a buffet. Needless to say we left the greater Toronto area feeling quite content with both our on ice performance and the lofty rations we had consumed. The trip was topped off with getting to meet and share a flight with former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Head Coach, Paul LaPolice, who congratulated us on our strong preseason and gained 27 new followers on Twitter.

The herd heads west on Thursday to face our long time rival, the University of Alberta Pandas, in what is sure to be a cutthroat matchup. It’s been an exciting preseason but we’re feeling more than ready to begin Canada West play. Thanks for reading!
