Funds support recipients’ costs to pursue on-ice dreams
February 1st, 2024 – Los Angeles, CA: Black Girl Hockey Club (BGHC), a nonprofit advocating for Black women in ice hockey, is pleased to announce our winter 2024 scholarship recipients. BGHC is awarding a total of $5,000 to four outstanding players.
The BGHC scholarship was established to assist and encourage Black women to continue their interest in hockey and simultaneously address the underrepresentation of Black women in the sport. The scholarship, which is currently dispersed three times a year, works to subsidize the cost of playing hockey for Black girls throughout the US between the ages of 9-18 years old. Our 2024 Winter Scholarship winners are:
● Arianna Willett of Washington, D.C.
● Ella Rose Banks of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
● Maealie Glanzer of Bellingham, Washington.
● Sophie O’Neill of Chicago, Illinois.
Sophie joins the BGHC scholarship cohort, having demonstrated her commitment, talent, and potential in the sport. Ella Rose, the sole goalie of the BGHC scholarship cohort, emphasized the importance of visibility, stating, “If I continue as an active member of my team and association, there is an increased chance that other children of color might follow my example to play a sport not commonly played by Black children.”
The scholarship extends beyond recipients to spark impact throughout their communities. Maealie, a four-time scholarship awardee, stated, “..it helped me connect with my community even better and show them that anyone can change the way of the game with a voice.” Arianna, a previous Bauer grant awardee, said, “I use these skills to mentor players on my former teams
from my communities.”
“We are so excited to kick off Black History Month by acknowledging the hard work of these
Black queens! Building a foundation rooted in community for these hockey players continues to be an integral part of their growth as well as ours here at BGHC. We are proud to be a part of their story.” stated Renee Hess, Founder and Executive Director at Black Girl Hockey Club. BGHC is immensely proud of all of our scholarship recipients and look forward to supporting them and their families on and off the ice.
