After one great season of playing hockey for the Sabres, I have decided to go back! So much to look forward to this year. We won the Austrian Championship last year, so we will be competing in the IIHF European Women’s Champions Cup this upcoming season. Teams from all over Europe that have won their National Championship will be competing in this tournament. We are hosting the first round for Group D, October 29-31, 2010, in Vienna! If we win we advance to the second round, December 3-5, 2010 (location: Czech Republic or Finland ), and then to the finals, February 25-27, 2011 (location: tbd).http://www.iihf.com/home-of-hockey/club-events/ewcc/2011-preliminary.html
Training camp started this week in Vienna for the Sabres, unfortunately I cannot join the team until early September. I am very excited to see my teammates and begin to prepare with them for the Champions Cup and EWHL league play. The EWHL consists of teams from Austria, Slovakia, Slovenia, Germany and Italy. Apparently this year Holland has a team in our league, so we will be traveling to Amsterdam.
My roommates (Kiira Dosdall (USA), Janine Weber (Austria) and Valentina Bettarini (Italy) and I are very fortunate to live in a beautiful apartment in the second district of Vienna. This year we will also be joined by another Canadian (Leanne Kisil), who will be playing with us in the Champions Cup. I plan on making more of a conscious effort to learn German while I am over there. It is easy to get away with only speaking English in Vienna, and everyone on the team speaks English. Janine and Valentina are very helpful and patient in translating for us whenever we ask. Wish me luck!!
