Sami Jo Small Named Toronto Furies General Manager

TORONTO
(June 11, 2018) – The Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) is excited to welcome three-time Olympian, Sami Jo Small, as the new general manager of the Toronto Furies.

“I love the opportunity to work with diverse individuals who collectively share the same goals and I’m excited to bring my expertise I gained helping to start the league to the future of the Furies,” commentated Small. “I want the Furies to be a place players want to play. I want our staff and volunteers to feel valued for the tireless work they put in. I want to reach out and engage our amazing alumni who have so much to offer as role models and mentors for the current generation. Most importantly, I want to provide fans with an incredible sports experience when they come to see the Furies play.”

A Stanford University alumna, Small brings with her a decorated resumé both on and off the ice.

Small has amassed 18 years in elite women’s hockey. First, as a member of the Brampton Thunder (now Markham Thunder) for three seasons. Then, 15 seasons as a member of the Toronto organization where she helped win four national and North American championships, as well as the Clarkson Cup in 2014.  Small is a leader in numerous statistical categories throughout women’s hockey, but more importantly has served as team representative to the CWHLPA, Sponsorship Chair at the league level, and the CWHL’s Vice Chairman on the Board at its inception.

Internationally, Small has represented Canada at three Olympic Games, winning two gold medals at the 2006 Turin Games and 2002 Salt Lake City Games, along with a silver medal during the introduction of women’s hockey at the 1998 Nagano Games. Small also owns five IIHF World Championship gold medals, winning in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, and 2007, also being awarded two MVP awards.

She is one of only a select few players to have ever completed a triple-crown, winning Olympic gold, World Championship gold, and the Clarkson Cup.

Off the ice, Small is a professional speaker traveling across North America working with some of the world’s top companies and associations on the importance of team. She is married to five-time Paralympian Billy Bridges and together they have a two-year old daughter.
