Who knew there was an incredible niche for women’s hockey waiting to be unlocked in the vibrant town of LaSalle, Ontario?
In the spring of 2019, we received an overwhelming response to a circulated email regarding the potential of LaSalle’s first women’s hockey league. Within 24 hours of opening registration, we had 64 women signed up and a wait list growing by the hour.
This 13-week spring season, with 70% of women who hadn’t played hockey before, kicked off with many learning how to skate. We enjoyed unintentional pirouettes, thanked the boards for helping us stop, skated amongst players using bubble wrap for extra bottom protection, and thrived in the empowerment of playing a fabulous sport that seemed hard to access as a beginner.
We saw so much improvement through the spring that we proceeded with opening registration for the regular 2019 season and hit the ice, skating this time.
We have players from their 20s to 60s and continue to make fun memories, including the joy one player brought when she forgot her jersey and had to wear her dress on the ice. We Laugh Out Loud while making friendships in a small town. We are achieving more balanced lives and being positive role models for those of us who have smaller eyes watching. We love to entertain our spectators.
We are Ladies of LaSalle (LOL) hockey league.
