MEET GIA!

Tell us about yourself!

Hi! My name is Gia. I’m from Toronto and I play forward/left wing in hockey. A few years ago, my friend from baseball told me to try hockey so we could play together all year round. I loved it right away and have been playing ever since! Now, I play U11A for the Etobicoke Dolphins. It’s so much fun!

What made you want to be a WHL Brand Ambassador?

What made me want to be a WHL Brand Ambassador is that I really want to help make women’s and girls’ hockey even better. I hope I can show other players that trying hockey is a really awesome idea. Plus, I want to show the girls in my community that you can play hard, be really good at hockey, and succeed if you work hard, both on and off the ice.

What are you most looking forward to as a #WHLAMBASSADOR?

I’m most looking forward to just having fun! I’m excited about being a WHL ambassador because I’ll get to connect and chat with girls just like me. I want to meet others who have similar goals and always want to get better. It’s going to be so cool!

What’s something not a lot of people know about you?

Something not a lot of people know about me is that I also love playing competitive Little League baseball at High Park. We’ve got an awesome team with hardworking girls and coaches who give us great opportunities. My favourite position is catcher. It’s so much fun playing both hockey and baseball!

If you could sit down and have dinner with one hockey player, who would it be and why?

If I could sit down and have dinner with one female hockey player, it would have to be Natalie Spooner. It’s so hard to pick just one because I have a solid four favourites, but okay! I’d choose her because she’s amazing. She was the top goal scorer in the PWHL this year, which is super cool. Plus, there’s a chance she might bring her son, Rory, and that would be so much fun!Natalie is also really inspiring. She’s worked so hard to get where she is, and she’s always super nice and encouraging to young players like me. I’d love to hear her stories about her hockey journey and get some tips from her. And of course, it would be awesome to talk about what it’s like playing at the highest level.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given in hockey or in life?

The best advice I’ve ever been given is, “Work hard, be dedicated, and great opportunities and experiences will come.” It really helps me remember to keep trying my best, no matter what!

What’s your dream for women’s hockey?

My dream for women’s hockey is for the new PWHL to have all hockey lovers appreciate the game and come to the games to them  on. It’s so cool that now we have a place where we can really play when we grow up!I would love to see women’s and girls’ hockey become as popular as men’s and boys’ hockey. It would be awesome if more girls could start playing from a young age. Hockey is such an amazing sport where you make great friends and meet really inspirational people.
