To commemorate Black History Month (February), the Black Girl Hockey Club Canada (BGHC) recently took to social media to celebrate the extraordinary contributions of black women who have paved the way in hockey throughout history.
Mentioned in the lineup of incredible women are Angela James, Kim Davis, Blake Bolden, Sarah Nurse, Saroya Tinker, Sophie Jaques, Mikyla Grant-Mentis, and Kelsey Koelzer.
Angela James: Former Player, World Champion and Hockey Hall of Fame Inductee.
“Angela is a pioneer and trailblazer, as she was the first and only Black woman to captain Canada’s National Women’s Ice Hockey Team.”
Kim Davis: Senior Executive VP of Social Impact, Growth Initiatives & Legislative Affairs at the NHL.
“Kimberly is a trailblazer and change agent, positively disrupting the financial industry and wide world of sports over her illustrious 30+ year career.”
Blake Bolden: Former Player, and current mentor and NHL scout for the LA Kings.
“Not only was Blake the first Black woman to play professional hockey, but she is also the first Black woman to scout with an NHL organization.”
Sarah Nurse: Current Team Canada Olympian and Professional Women’s Hockey Player for PWHL Toronto.
“Sarah is the first and only Black woman to win Olympic gold medal in Women’s Hockey.”
Saroya Tinker: Retired Professional hockey player, current Analysts & Manager of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for the PWHL.
“Saroya is the Founder and Executive Director of Black Girl Hockey Club Canada.”
Sophie Jaques: Current Professional Women’s Hockey Player for PWHL Boston
“Sophie is the first and only Black woman to ever win the Patty Kazmier Award for top NCAA D1 performer of the year.”
Mikyla Grant-Mentis: Current Professional Women’s Hockey Player for PWHL Ottawa.
“In 2022, Mikyla signed the highest paid professional women’s hockey contract.”
Kelsey Koelzer: Retired Professional Women’s Hockey Player and Current NCAA D3 Head Coach at Arcadia University.
“Kelsey is the first and only Black female Head Coach in NCAA hockey history.”
