Born in Beauceville, Quebec, Marie-Philip Poulin is best known by her Canadian fans as “Captain Clutch” and the GOAT [Greatest Of All Time] of Women’s Hockey.
Poulin has secured her status as a big game performer and one of the best hockey players in the world – winning three gold medals in her four Olympic appearances. However, 2022 has arguably been one of her most accomplished years yet.
The 31 year old hockey star lead Canada’s National Women’s Team to victory as their captain back in February, battling team USA for a 3-2 win for gold at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. She finished the tournament with six goals and 11 assists for 17 points, and is the only hockey player in the world (male or female) to have scored goals in four different Olympic hockey finals.
In June the Montreal Canadien’s signed Poulin as a Player Development Consultant for their team, and in September 2022 the Canadian captain came in clutch once again at the IIHF Women’s World’s in Denmark – leading the team to a 2-1 win against the United States for their 12th title.
Currently, Poulin captains team Harvey’s of the Professional Women’s Hockey Player Association (PWHPA). Not only is Team Harvey currently leading in points for the 2022-23 season, but Captian Clutch continues her leading streak with the most goals scored this far into the Dream Gap Tour.
As if these accomplishments weren’t outstanding enough, in the beginning of December, Marie-Philip Poulin became the FIRST woman in history to win the Northern Star Award (formerly the Lou Marsh Trophy) as Canada’s top athlete of the year.
“From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU everyone for making this possible especially my teammates” – said Poulin in a Tweet.
As 2022 comes to an end, The Canadian Press announced Wednesday December 28, 2022, that Marie-Philip Poulin has ALSO been voted as The Canadian Press female athlete of the year! The Canadian Press began recognizing male and female athletes of the year in 1932. Captain Clutch is the second female hockey player to be voted for the award after Hayley Wickenheiser in 2007.
Congratulations Poulin on ALL of your outstanding achievements! 👏
